Justino's Madeira

Madeira’s relationship with the vine began in the earliest days of its settlement. Under the direction of Prince Henry, the Navigator, the captains João Gonçalves Zarco, Tristão Vaz Teixeira and Bartolomeu Perestrelo introduced various crops brought from mainland Portugal and the Mediterranean. Among them were sugarcane from Sicily and vines from Candia, in Greece, including the renowned Malvasia.
